| On January 4, 2006 Texas
won its first national football championship since 1970 when Vince Young
led the Longhorns with a thrilling come-from-behind 41-38 victory over
favored Southern California. Some call this the greatest college game
ever played but Longhorn fans know this as one of many spine-tingling
game moments for their beloved ‘Horns. Texas now boasts of four
national football championships in their long football tradition with
their first three earned by one legendary coach and athletic director,
Darrell Royal. Royal posted an astonishing 167-47-5 career record and
directed championships in 1963, 1969, and 1970. Many of the greatest players
ever to wear the burnt orange and white come together with Darrell Royal
to share their memories in What it Means to be a Longhorn. Here is but
a sampling of the storied players who contribute their dreams, thoughts,
and memories from that most memorable of times; the time they were a Longhorn:
Tommy Nobis, Steve McMichael, Chris Simms, Vince Young, Roosevelt Leaks,
Jerry Sisemore, Doug English, Eric Metcalf, Priest Holmes, Cedric Benson,
Derrick Johnson, and…many more. |
